“Big breasts, blond wigs, flashy clothes… You think hooker, I think Dolly Parton, my childhood idol!” Becca Potts wrote these words to answer the question, “what factors in your life have led you to your career path?” On her application to Belmont University in Nashville, Becca went on to describe countless family videos of herself as “the little curly-headed girl walking around with a lion's tail singing everything from “White Limousine” by Dolly Parton to “A Spoonful of Sugar…” from Mary Poppins.
Becca's passion for singing was never discouraged by her parents. “They always prodded me to sing and perform. Although they worried that I might grow up to be tone deaf, they never told me to think about pursuing something else.”
Anyone who has heard Becca Potts sing knows that she did not “grow up to be tone deaf!” Anything but! By age 18, Becca had already sung with Billy Dean, Michael W. Smith, and had completed her first recording project, titled “Fulfilled.” Her extraordinary voice combines the agility of Cristina Aguleria and the range of Celine Dion with the power to rock like Bonnie Raitt.
But an awesome voice alone cannot move the soul. Becca's songwriter and vocal coach, Leigh Ashmore Stephenson, writes, “As I got to know Becca through this project, she came to mean so much to me. Yes, her voice was incredible, but its beauty paled in comparison to that of her heart for God, her family, and friends. God has taught me so many things through Becca-- that it is the soul that sings, not the voice; that it is the spirit that speaks and not the song; and most of all, only God is awesome.” By 18, Becca knew exactly who she was, and what she believed. “I care more about expressing who I am than who people think I should be…my love for singing has also become the way that I spread the gospel of Christ!”
With this understanding, Stephenson crafted each song to fit Becca's voice, personality, and musical style. “Becca's voice is so rich and sultry in the lower range that you just want to snuggle up to it. But in higher ranges, it is riveting and powerful, infused with the power that flows from a heart in tune with God.”
And Becca's message rocks! The first song, “Who is Gonna Save Ya,” relentlessly drives home the title question. The answer follows in the equally compelling second song, “It is the Power of God.” The lyrics of all the songs are scriptural. The words illustrate God's truth, challenging you to a deeper relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
One of the most poignant, “Anna's Song,” was inspired by a 14-year-old girl's decision to accept Christ as her personal savior. Anna shared that the Holy Spirit had been calling her to make a decision to follow him, but she struggled with going forward because she didn't want her friends and family to think that she wasn't already a Christian. Anna described how her heart kept saying, “Yes, Lord,” but she “couldn't let go of that chair” in front of her. When she finally did go forward and publicly profess Christ, she said, “my heart was forever changed.”
Anna was Becca's younger sister, and with Anna's permission, Becca recorded “Yes, Lord.” It became their father's favorite; he said, “I love this song because it is one daughter's testimony sung so beautifully by my other daughter.”
Although Becca was accepted to Belmont and planned to attend in fall '02, God in
His sovereignty revealed a shockingly different plan. On July 4, the van in which Becca's family was traveling ran off the road. Becca, Anna, and their father, Bill, were all killed.
Though the loss of Becca, Anna, and Bill is yet incomprehensible, one thing remains clear. Becca wrote, “As I have grown up, I have gone from wanting to sing country music to wanting to make music my ministry. My dream has changed a little, matured a little, but it is still basically the same dream. Music has rocked me, and I plan on using it to rock your world!”
“Fulfilled” is an extraordinary project, vocally, lyrically, and musically. Through it, we catch a glimpse into the very soul of a passionate young artist, called both by God, and to Him.
Becca's dream is fulfilled.
